about

Songwriter Eksteen Jacobsz describes the songwriting process for this song:

This is the second oldest song on the album and was written after the release of Tunnel Vision. It didn’t fit for Stone the Crow and I decided that if it wasn’t going to be used on this album it would be lost forever.

Again the riff is the glue that keeps it all together. The riff was actually written a long time after the song came to be. This song differs quite a lot structurally from the demo but I think it works better now.

This was the first song we recorded the vocals for and I must admit that it was a blast to stand alone in M5 and sing. Personally I think it’s the best vocal on the whole album. A big hook is the choir-like chorus “I’m Falling”.

It was suggested a few times by others that the hook should be used more than once in the song but I wanted it to have a surprise element.

The bridge section gave Darryl grey hairs but I was adamant that the arrangement was just fine. This song also has a strong mountaineering theme by opening up with “I wanna see the damage done/ the sky that was lost and won/ into thin air you chased the sun”.

Apart from the fact that the song’s title is referring to the mountain K2, the idea that people are so obsessed with fastest, highest or strongest; they never give credit to second place.

The irony of the mountain K2 is that although it is not the highest mountain in the world, it is much harder and more dangerous to climb.

This is funny as the average Joe receives a lot glory if they climb Everest aided by sherpas, but very few of them would be able to make a scratch on K2.

lyrics

I wanna see the damage done
the sky that was lost and won
into thin air you chased the sun

jettison this itch I feel
amputate my wings before they heal
this reassessment reassures me you’re quite real

Share some of your acid temper
assist me in when I’m in danger / lucid water
I’m falling

a favour will be in order
a recent reaction will prompt her
to prolong this promise of a distant border

what keeps us together will tear us apart
some will conquer and leave their mark
I’ll lie here waiting for you in the dark
Climb just a little more into my heart
