about

Songwriter Eksteen Jacobsz describes the songwriting process for 'Come & Go':

I wrote this song one evening at my girlfriend’s house. I had just listened to The Gas Light Anthem and that infectious up tempo style was a big inspiration.

Songwriting wise this was quite different from normal Sick-Leaves stuff. In the verses the chord progression is quite static, only to speed up in the chorus. The break down solo section is intentionally very U2-ish.

The bass line was quite problematic, for the simple reason that it felt too simplistic.
Darryl helped me a lot here, as it felt that something more intricate was necessary.
I trusted his judgement as he is a great bass player himself.

Lyrically storytelling and day dreaming is the order of the day here. It tells the tale of a couple who keeps evading their landlords as they can’t afford rent. “head for a place where they’ll find no trace of us as we disappear”.

Yet they dream of better days “So I’ll find myself a dream to grow / to grow like a mushroom cloud”. I think there are so many people in the world who are living on the edge and who dreams of the day when they’ll be financially free.

lyrics

Over the hills and far away
is where the world supposedly ends
you know it’s kind of a hard day’s night
to cover the rent

I sweat and strive with the cut of my knife
give it all to those who don’t care
Then at night when I get back home to you
the sparkle seems to re-appear

so run run run as fast as you can
run as fast as you possibly can
head for a place where they’ll find no trace
of us as we disappear

Say goodbye
What are you waiting for?

Then where shall we go when all we have to do is think
About what came before salvation’s on the brink
may they always chase our shadows and be late by a week
better pack up and leave yeah we come and go

I’ll coax you away with a decoy
To the far deep south of Detroit
I’ll call in sick say I’m alive
Yeah say that I won’t be in

So I’ll find myself a dream to grow
To grow like a mushroom cloud
As it rises into the stratosphere
You know it won’t rain
