about

Songwriter Eksteen Jacobsz describes this track off Last Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy

This song tells the story of a mountaineering accident and asks the question whether people are supposed to be scampering up oxygen starved cliffs. I am fascinated by mountaineering and read a book by Stephen Venables, Higher than The Eagle Soars, which described his expedition up the east face of Everest in 1988 and becoming the first Brit to ascend Everest without supplemental oxygen. In the process he spent a night close to the summit and a night at the south col. He survived without frostbite, which is just about as close to a miracle as what you can get. It’s also in this book where I got the title for the album, Last Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy.

The riff is very groove based and reminds me a bit of Led Zeppelin. A thing I learned from Darryl during recording was how much emotion a slide can create if used correctly. Another place we used the slide very well for emotion was in From where you came. The bridge is musically one of my favourite parts of the album for the reason that the guitar plays a counter melody to the vocals, but it works very well.

lyrics

Out of breath out of sight we pushed upwards
Willed life back into our leaden legs
Your foot prints mocked my stumblin’ mind
Light beams pierced through the stormy night

Some said we’d fail and be left behind
Yeah – I sense we weren’t meant to fall in line

We’ve got to move faster than this
push on before we halt to rest
you fell without your safety line
hurtled through space without arrest

Yeah I sense we weren’t meant to climb
For a moment nothing seemed to be
going in, my lungs were empty
Back over that crest I crawled
watch out as time slows down

Yeah – we’ve got to move faster than this
